Those whom God effectually calls, he also freely justifies,1 not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins and by accounting and accepting them as righteous.2 This is not for anything done in them or done by them but for Christ’s sake alone.3 God justifies them not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other gospel obedience to them. God justifies them by imputing Christ’s active obedience to the whole law and passive obedience in his death, and he does this through faith.4 This faith they have is not of themselves. It is the gift of God.5
Faith thus receiving and resting on Christ and his righteousness is the only instrument of justification.6 Yet it is not alone in the person justified but is always accompanied with all other saving graces. It is not a dead faith but works by love.7
Christ by his obedience and death fully paid the debt of all those who are justified. By his sacrifice in the blood of his cross in their place, he underwent the penalty due to them and so made a proper, real, and full satisfaction to God’s justice on their behalf.8 Since His obedience and satisfaction were accepted in their stead, their justification is wholly of free grace, for he was given freely by the Father for them, not for anything in them.9 This was so that both the exact justice and rich grace of God might be glorified in the justification of sinners.10
From all eternity God decreed to justify all the elect,11 and Christ, in the fullness of time, died for their sins and rose again for their justification.12 Nevertheless, they are not justified personally until the Holy Spirit actually applies Christ to them in due time.13
God continues to forgive the sins of those who are justified,14 and although they can never fall from the state of justification,15 yet they may by their sins fall under God’s fatherly displeasure.16 In that condition, they will not usually have the light of his countenance restored to them until they humble themselves, confess their sins, seek pardon, and renew their faith and repentance.17
The justification of believers under the Old Testament was, in all these respects, one and the same with the justification of believers under the New Testament.18

- Romans 4:5–8 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered;blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.” Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. ↩︎

Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. ↩︎
- Phiippiansl 3:8–9 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
