The Perseverance of the Saints

Those whom God has accepted in the beloved, effectually called and sanctified by his Spirit, and given the precious faith of his elect, can neither totally nor finally fall from the state of grace but will certainly persevere to the end. They are eternally saved, for the gifts and callings of God are irrevocable.1 Consequently, he continues to produce and nourish in them faith, repentance, love, joy, hope, and all the graces of the Spirit which incline to immortality.2 Though many storms and floods arise and beat against them, these shall never be able to take them off that foundation and rock on which they are fastened by faith. Notwithstanding, through unbelief and the temptations of Satan, the sensible sight of the light and love of God may for a time be clouded and obscured from them,3 yet he is still the same, and they shall be sure to be kept by the power of God for salvation. There they shall enjoy their purchased possession, having been engraved upon the palms of his hands and their names having been written in the book of life from all eternity.4

This perseverance of the saints depends not on their own free will but on the immutability of the decree of election,5 which flows from the free and unchangeable love of God the Father. Their perseverance likewise depends on the oath of God6 and the efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ and union with him,7 on the abiding of his Spirit, the seed of God within them,8 and the nature of the covenant of grace.9 From all of these the certainty and infallibility of this perseverance also arises.

Christians may fall into grievous sin and continue for a time in it,10 through the temptation of Satan and of the world, the prevalence of corruption remaining in them, and the neglect of the means of their preservation. Through such sin they incur God’s displeasure and grieve his Holy Spirit,11 come to have their graces and comforts impaired,12 have their hearts hardened and their consciences wounded,13 hurt and scandalize others, and bring temporal judgments upon themselves.14 Despite all this, they will renew their repentance and be preserved through faith in Christ Jesus to the end.15

    6. Hebrews 6:17–18 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. ↩︎
    7. Romans 5:9–10 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
